Camp Green Lane Blog Post–January 7th

Happy New Year!!!!  From the several pictures and posts on social media, it looks like there were lots of Camp Green Lane family reunions over winter break. We loved seeing friends and bunkmates laughing, playing, hugging, and smiling with one another. Social Media is great for that reason – checking in with far-away friends and family to see how everyone is doing. But we love our electronics-free summers between the arches. When people ask why we are so adamant about CGL being an electronics-free zone we can spout off about a million reasons. Here are just a few:

Having an electronics-free summer:

-encourages children to spend more time off their beds/couches and in the great outdoors. Rather than liking pictures of nature on social media, your child can experience it firsthand!

-promotes face-to-face socialization and interactions between campers, plugging into the connections they make with other campers and counselors as they unplug from their electronics.

-helps to ease homesickness. Not seeing what’s happening in the real world and at home helps campers focus on the friends and fun all around them at camp!

-allows campers to discover new skills and interests. Not focusing on electronics frees up a lot of time and energy that can be devoted to a new sport or hobby, or rekindle a love of reading or arts.

-liberates kids from “FOMO” or fear of missing out. You can’t worry about missing out on something that you can’t see.

-helps children become more independent. With the electronic connection between parents and kids cut for seven weeks, children have the freedom to explore their interests at their own pace.

In short, an electronics-free summer between the Arches is about getting back to basics: sun, fun, friends, silliness, singing, cheering, running, swimming, climbing… that’s a recipe for an incredible seven weeks.
