Camp Green Lane Blog Post July 8th

Today we had a professional from SCUBA instructor come to Camp Green Lane to teach our campers S.C.U.B.A. Many people do not know that S.C.U.B.A is an acronym. It stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Our campers were underwater in the pool with oxygen tanks becoming trained to hunt for buried treasure. S.C.U.B.A camp-within-a-camp was a huge success. In our age appropriate groups, all campers were breathing underwater and learning how to dive like a professional.

Those not participating in SCUBA camp had Olympics rallies this morning followed by some rainy day activities but then the skies cleared up and we had a regular afternoon! There was an intense game of Debs BBK today. For those of you who do not know what BBK is, here is a little explanation:

  • The game is played with two teams on Basketball court #2
  • The field is set up like a baseball/softball game
  • The team in the field/court has someone on each base, a pitcher, and everyone else spread out on the court and beyond. The kicking team has someone handing them the basketball under the home basket.
  • The pitcher rolls the kickball to the hitter/kicker and after the kicker kicks it, they run and get the basketball. They must dribble to 1st base and touch the corner…shoot a basket at 2nd base…dribble to 3rd base and touch the corner…and then shoot a basket at home plate.
  • While this is happening, the outfield must receive the kick ball…throw it to the person on 1st base (this person will have a basketball in hand), after that person touches the kickball with the basketball they throw the ball to 2nd base. 2nd baseman shoots a basket and passes it to the 3rd baseman who then passes it to the person at home who then shoots the basket.
  • If the outfield team shoots the basket first, it’s an out, if they catch the kick ball it’s also an out. If the kicking team scores first they get a point.
  • The rest works like kickball with the fouls/innings.

I promise, it is less confusing to play than it is to explain. BBK is one of those Camp Green Lane games that don’t tend to make all that much sense to anyone who has never played it but is tons of fun to play and watch!
